During the coronavirus period, Antwerp residents spent more time than ever walking in their leisure time. This meant the percentage of walking in the modal split (the ratio between the types of transport) increased to more than 10% during leisure time in 2020. In 2022, this percentage was slightly lower, at 3.3%. The city will continue to focus on a pedestrian-friendly city centre in the coming years by creating (speed limited) residential areas.
